Assembly intern program has openings

A limited number of Assembly Session Intern or Graduate Intern programs in Albany are available to college students, who are residents of New York or attend school in New York State, Assemblyman Robin Schimminger, D-Town of Tonawanda, announced.

Session interns spend at least 30 hours per week, from January to mid-May, working with Assembly members or research staff on various assignments and learning about the legislative process.

Students can receive a semester of college credit for participating and a $3,500 stipend is also awarded to help defray expenses.

The Graduate Intern program is available to students enrolled in or who have recently completed a graduate program. To be eligible, they must also be New York State residents or attend school in the state.

Graduate Interns work full-time with Assembly leaders in professional assignments from January through June and receive $11,500 in stipends.

Applications for both the Session Intern program and Graduate Intern program are available at area colleges or from Schimminger's district office at 3514 Delaware Ave. in Kenmore.

Session Intern applications must be submitted to the college liaison officer by mid-October. Individual deadlines may vary, however.

The college liaison officer must then submit all materials to the state by Nov. 1.

Graduate intern candidates must apply directly to the Assembly Intern Committee by Nov. 1.
