Longtime band leader Donald L. Wehner died Friday (Sept. 21, 2001) in United Memorial Medical Center, Batavia, after a brief illness. He was 74.

Born in Varysburg, Wehner started playing drums in his uncle's band. In the late 1950s, he started his own band, the Don Wehner Orchestra, which performed in the area for nearly 30 years.

A World War II Navy veteran, he worked 29 years as a state corrections officer at Attica Correctional Facility, retiring in 1987.

r Survivors include his wife of 40 years, the former Mary A. LaBarron; two sons, Jeffrey, of Junction City, Kan., and Bradley of Carmel, Ind.; four daughters, Kimberly Burns of Batavia, Wendy Sheffer of Chili, Christine of Warsaw and Melissa Holley of Wayland; his mother, Vada Glor Wehner of Attica; a sister, Annette Jamalkowski of Attica; two brothers, Louis of Barefoot Cove, Fla., and David of Rochester; and 13 grandchildren.

Private services were held today.
