Caroline Pawenska, 97, active in Queen of Peace Catholic Church for many years, died Saturday (Sept. 22, 2001) in Harris Hill Nursing Facility, Lancaster, where she had been a resident since 1992.
Born Caroline Janusik in what is now Oswiecim, Poland, she came to Buffalo in 1926. After marrying John Pawenska in 1928, she began work on the cleaning staff at the Liberty Bank Building, retiring in 1966. During World War II, she worked for U.S. Rubber Reclaiming Co.
A longtime parishioner of Queen of Peace Church, she was active in its Ladies of Charity and Altar and Rosary Society.
After retiring, she and her husband made their only return trip to their native Poland, visiting relatives for six weeks.
Surviving are two sons, Chester of Williamsville and Stanley Pawenski of St. Charles, Ill.; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Queen of Peace Church, 1955 Genesee St., after prayers at 9:30 in Melvin Sliwinski Funeral Home, 85 George Urban Blvd., Cheektowaga. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
