JORDAN MAY CONFIRM HE'S BACK MONDAY

WASHINGTON -- There was another sign Saturday that Michael Jordan's return is imminent.

A column in the Washington Post, without citing sources, said Jordan would confirm "early next week, probably Monday" his decision to play for the Washington Wizards this season.

Jordan all but confirmed his comeback to the Associated Press, CNN-SI and the Chiacgo Sun-Times on Sept. 10. At the time, Jordan planned to hold a news conference in Washington within 10 days, but last week's terrorist attacks prompted him to make the announcement more low key. Word definitely must come by Oct. 1, when the Wizards fly to Wilmington, N.C., for training camp.

Vargas gets part of title again

LAS VEGAS -- Fernando Vargas helped rescue the career of Jose "Shibata" Flores by putting him on his undercards and making him a sparring partner. On Saturday night, however, his generosity went only so far.

Vargas became a champion once again, wearing down Flores with a punishing assault on his body before finally stopping his former sparring partner after seven rounds to win the vacant WBA 154-pound title.

Vargas had to overcome a shaky start to regain a portion of the junior middleweight title that he lost when he was stopped by Felix Trinidad last December.
