FREDONIA -- Chautauqua County's final rabies clinic of the year will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, at the Town of Pomfret barn on Chautauqua Road.

Councilwoman Patricia Christina made the announcement during a meeting of the Pomfret Town Board on Thursday night.

In other business, the board approved a $3,000 contribution to the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program of Fredonia Central School District. The Village of Fredonia provides the police officer for the program, and the school district also makes a contribution.

The board also awarded a $4,665 contract to Armor Fence Co. of Orchard Park for 440 feet of new fencing for the Kelly Hill Cemetery.

Memorial planned for fallen firefighters

ALLEGANY -- The Allegany Fire Department and Kinney Hose Company of Weston Mills are sponsoring a memorial service Sunday for New York City's fallen firefighters.

The service will be held at 7 p.m. in Doyle Hall Chapel on the campus of St. Bonaventure University on Route 417.

All area firefighters are invited to attend and are urged to wear company uniforms.

Departments who want to bring fire apparatus should limit it to one vehicle because of parking restrictions.

Inspectors needed for 2002 elections

LITTLE VALLEY -- A training class for those who want to work as election inspectors will be held in October, according to the Cattaraugus County Board of Elections.

People are needed to work as inspectors at elections in March, September and November, said Election Commissioner Richard Stevenson.

An inspector must be at least 18 years old, enrolled in the Republican or Democratic parties, and must attend a three-hour training session once every three years.

The next training class will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 11 in the County Center.

If interested, register by Oct. 5 by calling the Board of Elections at 938-9111, Ext. 2400.

Meeting on researching family histories

SALAMANCA -- The Holland Land Co. and using land records for searching family histories will be the topics for a meeting of the Cattaraugus County Genealogical Society.

The group will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 2 in the Salamanca Library on Wildwood Avenue.

Karen Livesy of the Fenton History Center will talk about the land records and using them in genealogical research.

Anyone interested in genealogy can attend the meeting. New members are welcome.

Poets Picnic planned for Saturday

OLEAN -- A poetry reading by Mohawk poet Maurice Kenny will be featured Saturday during the fifth annual Poets Picnic beginning at noon in Rock City Park.

An open public reading and a music program also are planned. Those attending are asked to bring a dish to pass. Hot dogs, hamburgers and refreshments will be provided by the sponsors, the Cattaraugus County Arts Council and the Olean Public Library.

Rock City Park is three miles south of Olean on Route 16.

Free rabies clinics in Cattaraugus

RANDOLPH -- Four free clinics providing rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats in Cattaraugus County will be held in October.

The Cattaraugus County Health Department is sponsoring the clinics from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at county public works facilities in local towns.

Although the clinics are free, donations will be accepted to help with costs.

Clinics will be held Oct. 2 in Randolph, Oct. 4 in Markhams, Oct. 9 in Allegany and Oct. 11 in Franklinville.
