MAN INDICTED ON CHARGES INVOLVING INJURIES TO INFANT

LITTLE VALLEY -- An Allegany man accused of seriously injuring a month-old infant has pleaded innocent in Cattaraugus County Court.

Jeffrey R. Chouinard, 20, of Kaiser Road, was charged in a sealed grand jury indictment with first-degree assault and first-degree reckless endangerment.

District Attorney Edward M. Sharkey said Chouinard seriously injured the baby girl on April 4, 2000, by hitting her in the stomach.

In another case, sentencing was set for Nov. 19 for Martin D. Welshans, 38, of Holland, who pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and driving without a license June 9 in Yorkshire.

Portville student charged
in threat to school official

PORTVILLE -- An 18-year-old student at Portville Central School was arrested after threatening a school official who tried to break up a confrontation between two students, Cattaraugus County sheriff's deputies said.

The youth, who was not identified, was charged with harassment after the incident Tuesday, when he threatened Michael Debarbieri, the school's dean of discipline, deputies said.

The student is scheduled for an appearance Sept. 24 in Portville Town Court.

Wounded Sept. 4, officer
still in critical condition

A Medina police officer wounded during a drugstore shootout earlier this month remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Lt. Michael Russell has undergone multiple operations since the Sept. 4 gunfight inside Rosenkrans Pharmacy on Main Street. He was hit four times in the abdomen, arm and knee, authorities have said.

Russell was investigating a report of someone trying to fill a forged prescription for painkillers when gunfire erupted. The suspect, Peter F. Novellin, 38, of Albion, died after Russell shot him in the head.

Russell is a patient in Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.

Probe of shotgun threat
brings weapon, drug charges

A West Side man who allegedly used a shotgun to threaten an individual in a Connecticut Street apartment house was arrested by Central District police early Thursday.

John Higgins, 20, of the 400 block of Connecticut, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of 40 bags of crack cocaine.

Officers Mark Locicero and Michael Long found the drugs and gun when they responded to a call for assistance at 468 Connecticut at 12:45 a.m. Higgins also was charged with trespass.
