LOCKPORT -- A South Transit Street man accused of forging 10 of his brother's checks and cashing them was arrested Thursday.

Christopher J. Fitzgerald, 28, was charged with scheme to defraud and two counts each of forgery and petit larceny by Niagara County Sheriff's Investigators Patrick Weidel and Daniel Brown, deputies said.

Fitzgerald is accused of cashing checks totaling $650 in late June and early July at Quality Markets on Rochester Road and the Foot Locker store in the Lockport Mall on South Transit Road, Weidel said.

Bridge traveler arrested
after cocaine found in car

NIAGARA FALLS -- A Nashville, Tenn., man was arrested early Thursday when police found 3.2 grams of suspected cocaine in his car on the Rainbow Bridge.

Mark E. Narchus, 41, was charged with felony criminal possession of a controlled substance at 5:19 a.m. after the suspected drug was discovered inside a film canister stashed in his car's engine compartment, Detective Thomas Fournier said.

Cruelty charge is brought
after parakeets beheaded

LOCKPORT -- A Saxton Street man accused of cutting the heads off pet parakeets owned by a former girlfriend has been charged with cruelty to animals, Officer Kevin Schrader said.

Kevin J. Horton, 29, was arrested late Wednesday. Schrader said the ex-girlfriend discovered the beheaded birds in a cage on Horton's front porch when she went to retrieve them.
