Members of the newly formed Springville Village Police Department received a patriotic welcome Tuesday as they took an oath of office at the Springville Volunteer Fire Department.
As a tribute to the families and victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Springville Village Trustee Ferris Abdo sang "America the Beautiful" for more than 100 village officials, residents and guests who attended the police department reception.
The 13 police officers began foot patrols in the village Sept. 1. Shortly afterward, bike patrols were added, followed by police car patrols.
Officer John Avery presented Springville Village Police Chief John Fox with an appreciation plaque, noting that many of the officers were willing to become a part of the new force because of Fox's leadership.
Members of the new police department are John Fox, Joseph Alessi, George Avery, David Barbaritz, Joseph Bloom, James Comstock, Robert Ellis, Jeffrey Hicks, David Hoch and his K-9 dog Zeus, John Jewett, Kevin Loftus, John Politowski and Robert Rosenswie III.
Other community members also were recognized during the ceremony.
Springville Fire Chief Dennis Dains said six local emergency medical technicians were called to New York City on Sunday to provide medical relief for rescue workers there.
The Chaffee-Sardinia Fire Department provided an ambulance to accompany the team, which consisted of Concord, Springville and Chaffee residents Tim Benstead, Brian Benstead, Dave Hulley, Dave Walker, Dan Dytchowskyj and Dale Lightcap.
