Like all Americans, I was angry- very angry -- and wanted to do something personal to strike back. I was a rear gunner in carrier-based Douglas Dauntless dive-bombers (SBD) in World War II -- the plane that won the Battle of Midway. I wanted to call up the Navy office and volunteer to fly again. But I am 82 years old and there is only one flyable SBD left in the whole country. I decided my offer wouldn't be very practical.
But there was something I could do, and did. I called my broker and told him to buy me 2,000 shares of General Dynamics stock when the market opened Monday. General Dynamics makes airplanes, submarines, aircraft engines and tanks. The health of this company is very important to our country, and I wanted to do my little bit to support it during the temporary market depression.
I hope I join vast quantities of other investors who want to say to Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden that America can take a $20 billion hit, and still come out swinging!
