High school seniors are urged to participate in the 2002 Erie County Junior Miss program. Last year, more than $5 million in scholarship money was awarded at the local, state and national level. Contestants are evaluated based upon a judge's interview, scholastic achievement, creative and performing arts, fitness, and presence and composure. There is no entry fee. The Polish Heritage Dancers are looking for teen and pre-teen dancers, both male and female. Practices are held at the West Seneca Community Center, 4620 Seneca St., on Friday evenings. Costumes are provided. The non-profit group, dedicated to promoting Polish heritage, performs at nursing homes, festivals, parades. To register or for more information, call 937-0032.
Lancaster resident John Siejak, a Canisius High School student, is organizing a free health fair and bloodmobile for his Eagle Scout project with Troop 107, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday in the St. John Kanty gymnasium, 101 Swinburne St., near the intersection of Broadway and Bailey. The health fair is free and open to the public and will include blood pressure screenings, lead testing, CPR demonstrations and more.
Little League, junior varsity and high school cheerleading teams from all over New York State are invited to compete in the first "New York State Cheerleading and Dance Championships" Oct. 27 at Darien Lake. Judges will include members of the Buffalo Jills. First prize is the opportunity to perform a choreographed routine in Ralph Wilson Stadium at a Buffalo Bills home game. Second prize is a chance to perform for the Buffalo Bandits, of the National Lacrosse League, at HSBC Arena. Deadline for entry forms is Oct. 5. The cost is $15 per participant (includes admission to the theme park and Fright Fest) plus a $20 entry fee per squad. For entry forms and more information, call 599-4641.
