Gary E. Vellam, 56, who owned and operated a grape farm in Westfield until illness forced him to sell the property a few months ago, died Saturday (Sept. 15, 2001) in Kennedy at the home of his son, Gary E. Vellam II.
A native of Silver Creek, Vellam lived here for the past several years enjoying his favorite pastime: driving the boat he restored -- "Last Chance" -- on Lake Chautauqua.
Before going into grape farming full time, Vellam worked for Tennessee Gas Corp. in East Eden and for AMACO in Traverse City, Mich., and Houston.
His wife, Sara Anderson Vellam, died June 22, 1997.
Surviving in addition to his son are two daughters, Bridget Manwaring of Panama and Jennifer Leone of Westfield; and six grandchildren.
A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.
