Charles J. Deckop Jr., a former president of the Greater Buffalo Board of Realtors, died Sunday (Sept. 16, 2001) in Juno Beach, Fla. He was 89.
Deckop founded Deckop Realty in 1944. In 1971, the firm was purchased and became the residential division of W.D. Hassett Inc. Deckop continued to manage the division as a vice president of W.D. Hassett until retiring in 1978 and moving to Florida.
Gov. Nelson Rockefeller twice appointed him to the board of the Buffalo Psychiatric Center. He also was on the advisory board to the old Bank of Buffalo in the 1960s. Deckop was president of the 1968 Home Show sponsored by the Buffalo Better Homes Exposition.
Born in Buffalo, Deckop attended Nichols School, Canisius College and the University of Buffalo. He was a member of the Country Club of Buffalo, the Saturn Club and Buffalo Canoe Club and served as a past president of the Buffalo Skating Club.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth B.; two daughters, Susan Donner of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Betsy Cooke of Gulf Stream, Fla.; and two grandsons.
A Memorial Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Christopher's Catholic Church, Hobe Sound, Fla.
