Irene L. Bencal, 86, who volunteered for 15 years as a senior companion with the Health Association of Niagara County, died Saturday (Sept. 15, 2001) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, following complications from Parkinson's disease.
Born Irene Dabrowski in Niagara Falls, she was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School.
She worked as a laborer for Nabisco and the Carborundum Co., both in Niagara Falls, until she married Walter Bencal in 1946. He died in 1972.
The couple raised a family in a house on Military Road, Town of Niagara, on the site where the Factory Outlet Mall stands today. They moved to Ransomville in 1960. During the 1960s, Mrs. Bencal worked in the housekeeping department for the Ransomville General Hospital.
She later volunteered for the Health Association of Niagara County until she was immobilized by Parkinson's disease.
An active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society, Mrs. Bencal also enjoyed bowling and crafts.
Survivors include two sons, James and Paul, both of Ransomville; a daughter, Barbara Mikolajczyk of Dansville; two sisters, Alice Romanouski of Niagara Falls and Dolores Kachinoski of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 4671 Townline Road. Private burial will be held in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston.
