Two things are certain: 1.) a casino will bring jobs, visitors and money to downtown Buffalo, and 2.) government's greatest contribution to the economy is to remove barriers to investment and opportunity. Unfortunately, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver doesn't care about either of these things. Instead, he has vowed to hold up the casino measure as a weapon in a budget scuffle with the Republican governor.
In doing so, Silver has shown himself to be the embodiment of the calculating, self-serving politician. Instead of serving the populace, he values winning a myopic political battle. It is unfortunate that Western New York must suffer because of the catty whim of a Manhattan Democrat.
