She's sold millions of copies of her debut album, "No Angel." Eminem used her vocals on one of his hits. And her admirers even include those human/alien hybrid teens of Roswell High.
Meet British trip-hop chanteuse Dido, who plays Darien Lake Performing Arts Center on Monday. She first began getting attention once her dreamy tune "Here With Me" was chosen as the theme for the WB cult hit "Roswell." But Dido's career took off after rapper Eminem sampled her song "Thank You" in his hit "Stan" and she appeared in the controversial video for the tune.
Now, the plaintive "Thank You" has become a Top 5 hit in its own right. And "No Angel" is still in the Top 50. Not bad for an album that was released more than two years ago.
"It's nice that people are still enjoying it," she said in a recent telephone interview.
But along with the success, there's been a bit of a backlash. Spin magazine wrote that "Dido Mania" proved that "expensive hair can, in fact, compensate for goopy sentiment."
"So, I've sold 8 million records because of my haircut," she said. "That's pretty impressive. It makes my life quite easy, because when I do my next album, I'll just write a whole load of crap and then just call my hairdresser."
Luckily, attendees at the Darien show won't have to know how to craft a nice blunt cut in order to hear at least one of her new songs, "See The Sun," which she self-consciously describes as "depressingly positive." She'll also be performing the "No Angel" album in its entirety. So give your CD a break and check her out.
