JAMESTOWN -- The nine-story Hotel Jamestown building received heavy smoke damage after a fire broke out about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Fire Chief Sam Arcadipane said 50 residents and office workers were evacuated temporarily from the building after fire broke out in a fourth-floor apartment. One resident suffered minor injuries, he said.

The building, on West Third Street, has offices and senior citizen apartments run by the Jamestown Housing Authority.

The fire was extinguished in 20 minutes. A cause has yet to be determined.

Delevan woman, 64, faces
charge of welfare fraud

DELEVAN -- A Main Street woman has been arrested on a charge of welfare fraud.

Virginia Hanley, 64, is charged with third-degree grand larceny, third-degree welfare fraud and filing a false instrument. She is to appear July 5 in Olean City Court.

Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Department Investigator E.R. Travis said Hanley is accused of collecting welfare benefits, food stamps and assistance for paying her heating bills between July 1997 and July 2000 in the amount of $3,148. She was receiving a pension from the Buffalo Carpenters' Union, which, according to Travis, made her ineligible for the benefits.

Driver sought after chase
ending with crash into house

DUNKIRK -- A search continued Wednesday for a man who led police on a chase in two counties before crashing his car into a house, police said.

Police said they were seeking an arrest warrant for Jahmaul W. Johnson, 28, of Townsend Street. They said he fled police Tuesday night during a traffic stop in Erie County and drove here, where he climbed out of a car window after being involved in accidents involving another vehicle and a house on King Street.

Johnson is sought on charges of reckless endangerment and resisting arrest in the City of Dunkirk, as well as numerous vehicle and traffic violations. Several other charges from other jurisdictions also are pending, police said.

Versailles man charged
with sexual misconduct

A Versailles man has been arrested on a charge of sexual misconduct.

Mark A. Maines, 19, of Buffalo Street, was arrested by Cattaraugus County sheriff's deputies and charged with sexual misconduct and endangering the welfare of a child in the third degree.

Deputies said the incidents took place in the towns of Persia and Dayton between October and this month.

Maines was taken to Cattaraugus County Jail in lieu of $1,000 bail. He is to appear in Persia Town Court on July 10.

The court issued an order of protection for the victim, deputies said.
