Matthew W. Filipowicz, 94, of Depew, a retired Dunlop Tire Corp. worker, died Tuesday (June 26, 2001) in Sisters Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Buffalo, he had been a Depew resident since 1930. He worked at Dunlop as a tire builder for 47 years, retiring in 1972.
Filipowicz was active in the United Rubber Workers of America, serving as a shop steward, director and a union delegate for many years.
He and Jennie T. Szuder were married in 1931. She died in 1989.
Surviving are four sons, Francis J. of Richmond, Va., Matthew J. and Joseph, both of Depew, and Steve of Brockport; four daughters, Mary Haider of Zurich, Switzerland, and Helen Mitchell, Jane Brotz and Ann Wienckowski, all of Depew; two sisters, Caroline Guercio and Frances Greiger, both of Buffalo; 22 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday in SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 81 Burlington Ave., Depew, after prayers at 10:30 in Pacer Funeral Home, 2275 George Urban Blvd., Depew. Burial will be in St. Adalbert's Cemetery, Lancaster.
