NIAGARA FALLS -- A thief stole nearly $3,000 in cash from a Pierce Avenue home early Sunday, police said.

The homeowner told police she left home about 11:15 p.m. Saturday and, when she returned several hours later, discovered that a window had been broken and her bedroom ransacked.

Police said $2,500 was taken from a safe beneath a bed, $300 from a purse and a telephone was stolen.

Lockport woman not injured
as fire destroys her vehicle

MIDDLEPORT -- A Lockport woman who pulled into a parking lot after noticing smoke coming from the steering column of her car watched helplessly as flames destroyed the vehicle Saturday afternoon.

Kimberly Hare was westbound on Telegraph Road at about 2:30 p.m. when the fire began, Niagara County sheriff's deputies said. The 1991 car was declared a total loss.

Four cars are vandalized;
damage pegged at $2,000

NIAGARA FALLS -- Vandals caused more than $2,000 damage to four cars early Sunday morning.

Two cars parked in the 400 block of 22nd Street were damaged and three tires were flattened overnight, police said.

Two cars parked in the 1700 block of Willow Avenue were badly scratched, police said. Damage to one vehicle was pegged at $1,000 and another, $500.
