Mary L. Hughes, 63, a retired nursing home aide, died Wednesday (June 20, 2001) in Sisters Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Tuscaloosa, Ala., the former Mary Thomas attended school in Alabama and came to Buffalo in the mid-1950s. The mother of seven children, she began working as a nursing aide at Niagara Lutheran Nursing Home in 1973, retiring in 1998.
Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Jessie; three daughters, Brenda Johnson, Miranda Grable and Geraldine Horton, all of Buffalo; four sons, Gregory and Tyrone, both of Buffalo, Jessie Jr. of Augusta, Ga., and Howard of Aliceville, Ala.; her mother, Sadie Thomas of Bessemer, Ala.; five sisters, Nelly Jean "Mert" Williams of Fairfield, Ala., Bertha "Bert" Ingham and Minnie Scott, both of Bessemer, and Barbara Jean Thomas and Shirley Thomas, both of Newark, N.J.; two brothers, John Henry Thomas Jr. of Bessemer and Floyzel Thomas of Chicago; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Love Alive Fellowship Church, 1787 Genesee St., after a wake at 10. Burial will be in Forest Lawn.
