FIREFIGHTERS WARY IN BATTLING BLAZE AT OLD MISSILE BASE

Amherst firefighters responded cautiously Thursday to a report of a fire at the old Nike missile base in East Amherst, where ammunition once was stored.

The fire in an underground storage bunker was quickly extinguished, but only after consultations with fire inspectors, emergency services personnel, and county and federal firearms officials.

After it was determined that the fire wasn't near the underground ammunition, the Swormville Fire Department, assisted by other fire companies, entered the bunker and put out the fire by 11:30 a.m., 90 minutes after it was reported.

Fire Chief Steve Gnozzo said the fire was caused by sparks from a blowtorch used near a vent tube. He stressed that Veritay Technologies, which uses the property at 4845 Millersport Highway, was in full compliance with all regulations.
