WHAT: Artvoice Street Festival
WHEN: Noon to 9 p.m. Sunday
WHERE: Outdoors on Chippewa Street, branching off on Franklin Street and Delaware Avenue
The Artvoice Streetfest debuted in 1990 for 100 or so folks in the Calumet Arts Cafe. A bit of poetry was read, there was music and dancing, and, of course, food.
Sunday's Artvoice Streetfest bears little resemblance to that intimate gathering. Nearly 40 bands, 60 vendors and a host of other entertainment will fill Chippewa Street from Pearl to Elmwood, and both Franklin and Delaware from around the Continental up near Channel 2.
"The overriding vision, and what we keep pushing, is not just having a concert event, but a celebration of all of our cultural resources. We want to make a marriage and celebration of all the arts - that's why we have art, dancers, music; why we chalk the sidewalks and have interactive art. It's not just beer and a band," said Jamie Moses, Artvoice publisher and the event's creator.
The bands, many of them noteworthy - will perform on four stages. The main stage, to be set up on Delaware Avenue, will showcase Canadian favorites Treble Charger, Econoline Crush, 54-40 and Blue Rodeo, along with modern rockers Oleander. Additionally, there will be ethnic dancers, a climbing wall and bungee jump, games and vendors selling everything from food and jewelry to tattoos. Art will be presented by area artists and Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center.
