Michael Price, a senior at St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute, has won a national achievement award in writing from the National Council of Teachers of English based on a portfolio of written work he submitted last spring and a timed impromptu essay he wrote on an assigned topic. A Buffalo resident, he will attend Columbia University in the fall.

Kids 7 and up are invited to a "Dear Mr. President" letter-writing program at Barnes and Noble, 1565 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst, at 7 p.m. Thursday to promote the new "Dear Mr. President" series from Winslow Press. Letters will be forwarded to President Bush, and letter-writers will be entered in a drawing for prizes. A "book jam" for kids 9 to 13 to discuss "Turnabout" by Margaret Peterson Haddix and participants' favorite books will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 22. Pre-registration is required for both. Freshmen and juniors from Lewiston Porter High School, and professional actors from Theatre for a New Audience and Shakespeare in Delaware Park, will present "Shakespeare Tonight!," a free performance of scenes from Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet" and "Macbeth," at 7 p.m. Thursday at the school, 4061 Creek Road, Youngstown. The event is the culmination of an eight-day residency at the school through the Empire State Partnership program of Lew-Port and the Castellani Art Museum.

Ski Tamarack will hold a Snowboard & Ski big air fest starting at 8 a.m. Feb. 24. The $25 fee includes an eight-hour lift pass. Helmets are mandatory. Call 941-6821.

A six-week SAT preparation course will be offered on Thursday nights beginning Feb. 22 in Room 108 at Tonawanda High School, 150 Hinds St. The fee is $40 for City of Tonawanda residents and $45 for non-residents. Call 695-5501.

Aniela Baj, a Villa Maria Academy junior, has won an engraved bronze medallion as a distinguished finalist in the Prudential Spirit of Community Initiative, a national contest honoring volunteer work by young people, for the summer day camp program she runs at a Buffalo playground.

Artsreach, a 12-week program of visual workshops on Saturdays and after school for kids ages 6 and 7, 8 to 12 and teens, will start its spring session Feb. 27 at the art center in the north arch of the Niagara Falls Convention Center on Fourth Street. There is a $40 supply fee. Call 284-6188.
