I would like to comment on the Jan. 30 letter, "Bush's claims of compassion ring hollow," by Melinda DuBois, Buffalo Womenservices clinic director. She labels our new president as an "ignorant and punitive man." My question is, ignorant of what -- the contrived notion of a woman's "reproductive rights"? Punitive how? Is it his distaste for the dastardly, selfish and irresponsible act of abortion? I hardly think these sentiments constitute ignorance and a punitive mind-set. Heaven forbid we have a president who stands for moral character, personal responsibility and God.
DuBois asserts that there are women who "really need" the services of her clinic. I'm no doctor, but I'm fairly certain that abortion is not a biological need, like food, water or shelter.
Granted, terrible things such as rape and incest may lead to unwanted pregnancies. These tragedies, however, are few compared to those in which a woman and her partner have been just plain irresponsible with their right to choose or refuse sex.
DuBois laments, "What will the 1.2 million women who have abortions each year in the United States do" if Roe v. Wade is overturned? I believe we would have 1.2 million women with no choice but to take responsibility for their actions.
