A Salamanca woman is to answer charges Monday in Cattaraugus County Court of vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving in an accident that killed her mother and boyfriend.
Anna R. Ellis, 23, of Salamanca-Little Valley Road, was named Feb. 1 in a sealed grand jury indictment charging her with two counts of second-degree vehicular manslaughter, two counts of driving while intoxicated, and one count each of driving without a license, failure to keep right, driving to left of pavement and driving without a seat belt.
The eight-count indictment stems from an accident around 9 p.m. Dec. 12, 1999, in the Town of Olean, in which a 1997 Ford Escort driven by Ellis went off West River Road, hit a pole, then a tree, and plunged over a 12-foot embankment into the Allegheny River.
Ellis was taken to Erie County Medical Center for treatment for a broken ankle, leg and arm. She has since recovered.
However, Ellis' mother -- Michelle W. Ellis, 45, of E. Race Street in Salamanca -- was pronounced dead in Olean General Hospital.
Initially, rescue personnel were told that only the two women were in the car. But police received a report that Ellis' boyfriend -- Jonathan Teuscher, 19, of Portville -- was missing and had not reported to work the next day. Witnesses had reported seeing Teuscher with the two women prior to the accident.
Teuscher's body was recovered from the river Dec. 20, 1999.
