The Fredonia College Council went on record Wednesday as opposed to legislation that would limit the ability of State University of New York campuses to assess fees.
Fredonia State College President Dennis Hefner said the State Legislature wants to control fees, much as it now controls tuition. Fees are set by individual campuses, he told the Council on Wednesday.
Hefner noted that the college's full-time students pay $400 in fees per semester -- about midrange among SUNY campuses.
The fees cover services including student activities, varsity athletics, funding the health center, a technology fee for computer laboratories and a transportation fee for parking lots and bus service.
The campus has a procedure for adding fees, which includes student input, Hefner said.
"If we cannot charge fees, we will do away with some services," he said.
L. Michael Dimitri, vice president for student affairs, noted intramural programs would suffer.
"What are the alternatives for the students -- the Internet or the bottle?" said Council member Michael Sullivan.
The Council unanimously approved a resolution stating that the college uses strict fiscal controls and accounting procedures governing the fees.
Council member Louis Mancuso called the proposed legislation "bizarre."
In other business, library director Randolph Gadikian discussedSUNYConnect, the online library for all SUNY campuses. Fredonia is the first campus to be involved in what will be a five-year project.
The idea is to create an online library and to have all 18 million volumes in all SUNY libraries available to everyone, he said.
The campuses will also cooperate in purchasing and cataloging. In the long run, all expect to save money, Gadikian said.
In another matter, Vice President Jean Malinoski announced that the Oishei Foundation of Buffalo awarded a $750,000 grant for the development of a program of summer camps and yearlong art programs with the School of Music and departments of media arts and theater. The college will work with Buffalo inner-city schools.
