St. Lawrence earned a split of its weekend ECAC women's hockey league series with Niagara, defeating the Purple Eagles, 4-2, at Appleton Arena in Canton in a game that had some ugly moments.
The Saints (15-5-3, 11-3-2) built a 3-0 lead before Valerie Hall scored the first of her two goals for Niagara with 48 seconds left in the second period. NU (14-11-3, 6-9-3) pulled the goalie in favor of an extra attacker and Hall scored again with 53 seconds left in regulation to make it 3-2 before Jessica Wilson netted an empty-net goal for St. Lawrence.
Bad blood apparently carried over from Niagara's 3-1 upset of the third-place Saints on Saturday. Two altercations, the first resulting in 10 minutes in penalties, the second resulting in six, broke out in the third period. Hall and Meghan Maguire of the Saints each received double minors for roughing in the first incident. Amanda Reid of Niagara and Amanda Sargeant of the Saints received roughing minors in the second.
Tania Pinelli made 35 saves for Niagara; Caryn Ungewitter 21 for St. Lawrence.
Elsewhere, Mary Keddie netted the game-winner in the third period, and Emma Wadsworth scored twice as Buffalo State (7-4-1) defeated Chatham (Pa.), 4-2.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Kristin Cannon scored 17 points in her first start of the season to lead Massachusetts over St. Bonaventure, 76-45, in an Atlantic 10 game in Amherst, Mass. Melissa Fazio, with 13, led the Bonnies (6-15, 2-8).
Mary Legnard scored 20 points for D'Youville (7-8) in a 70-63 loss to Cazenovia.
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Three former Canisius stars -- Darrell Barley, Micheal Meeks and Craig Wise -- and former Niagara star Brian Clifford were among 20 players selected for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's 20th Anniversary team.
Barley and Meeks played from 1992-96 for the Griffs. Wise competed from 1991-95. Clifford played at Niagara from 1990-93.
