Buffalo

The Common Council will hold a public hearing to discuss environmental concerns at the Hickory Woods subdivision at 7 p.m. Thursday in Common Council Chambers at City Hall.

The presence of contaminants in soil around homes has prompted some residents to request that they be relocated -- possibly permanently -- while the problem is corrected. Though the Environmental Protection Agency said in November that there is no immediate threat posed by coke waste and other contaminants, some city lawmakers have said that homeowners' concerns must be given greater attention. Officials are awaiting the results of additional environmental studies.

A controversial plan to create a pedestrian plaza for the new Family Court Building at Niagara and West Eagle streets will be considered during a Common Council meeting at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Council Chambers in City Hall.

Erie County wants the city to grant an easement that would close a small stretch of Niagara Street to accommodate the proposed plaza. Some groups have been fighting the plan.
A public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Council Chambers in City Hall on the city's proposed $29.3 million federal block grant program.
The Binational Bridge Task Force meets at 2 p.m. Thursday in Room 1417 of City Hall. Members are expected to discuss recent developments involving the Peace Bridge project.

Cheektowaga

A rezoning application to build an 84-unit assisted-living residence for senior citizens on William Street near the Thruway in Cheektowaga is the subject of a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Town Hall, Broadway at Union Road. A regular meeting of the Town Board will follow.

The residence is planned at 2911 William St., in front of the Liberty Park Senior Apartments and across William Street from the Park Lane Plaza, officials said.

Evans

The advisory group of the Brant, Evans and North Collins Regional Farmland Protection Project will hear preliminary results of a study of farmers at its meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Lake Shore Central Middle School on Route 5.

David Haight of the American Farmland Trust will discuss the preliminary findings of a recent survey of farmers and agricultural landowners in the three towns. The towns have joined to develop a regional farmland protection plan and have contracted with American Farmland Trust.

Grand Island

The Town Board is scheduled to vote Monday on a rezoning change that would allow Fuccillo Chevrolet to build a new dealership at 2000 Alvin Road. The meeting, which starts at 8 p.m., is at 2255 Baseline Road.

Fuccillo, now at 2549 Whitehaven Road, has resolved concerns over whether Alvin Road can handle the increased truck traffic and over wetlands the project would disturb, said Supervisor Peter A. McMahon.

Also, the Town Board is to vote on appointing two new members to the Zoning Board of Appeals to replace Elwood Hausler and Shirley Martin, who resigned last month.

Hamburg
