Volunteers sought for van service

LEWISTON -- Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center is looking for volunteers to serve as drivers, driver assistants and substitutes for a van service it plans to begin this spring.

"Many people find it difficult to go to important outpatient services, tests, therapy and appointments with their doctors because they don't have any transportation," said Marcia M. Traverse, hospital spokeswoman.

"In order to fulfill our mission of providing quality health care and improving the health status of our community, it is important that services be accessible to our patients. Through research we have determined that many people, specifically the elderly, often are not able to access our services because of the lack of transportation."

The service would benefit patients who have no other transportation to the hospital and health center campus, 5300 Military Road, Lewiston; the Neighborhood Health Center, 3001 Ninth St., Niagara Falls; and the Patient Service Centers, 6950 Williams Road in Wheatfield and 549 Fourth St. in Niagara Falls, for outpatient services or appointments.

Hospital officials are studying routes and hope to have the service operating in early spring. The fee has not been set yet, but would be nominal, Traverse said. Projected hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Those interested in volunteering and who are in good health, have clean driving records and valid driver's licenses are asked to call 298-2144 and ask for Julie.

Students also will provide help from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from March 1 through April 5 in Niagara Falls High School, 4455 Porter Road.
