The Sept. 18 commentary by Mark Sommer, deploring the pyrotechnics employed by Tim Russert against first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton during her debate with Rep. Rick Lazio, spoke for millions of Americans who watched the debate. While using hypertactics against Clinton, Russert allowed Lazio to practice his antics and violate the agreement with NBC not to use props during the debate.
If Lazio is serious in his stand against soft money, then he should tell his mentors, former Sen. Alphonse D'Amato and Gov. George Pataki, to stop their vicious and clandestine campaigns against Clinton on his behalf.
