Catherine Mangan, who assisted her late husband in operating the former Strand Drug Store on Falls Street, died Thursday (Sept. 28, 2000) in the St. Francis Home of Williamsville after a lengthy illness. She was 95.
Born Catherine McAndrew in Pittston, Pa., she was a high school graduate and attended Marymount College in Scranton, Pa.
She moved to Niagara Falls in 1930 and had lived in Williamsville since 1995.
Mrs. Mangan assisted her husband, pharmacist J. Gerald, as the pharmacy manager at Strand Drug Store, which they established during the Depression in 1933. The firm moved to Third Street in 1971, and sons Gerald P. and Thomas also joined the pharmacy.
The pharmacy operated for 54 years until closing in 1987.
A longtime member of St. Mary of the Cataract Catholic Church, she was a former member of the St. Francis Guild. One of her greatest joys, beside her children and grandchildren, was attending daily Mass at her church.
Her husband died in 1965.
Besides her two sons, survivors include another son, Dr. William J. of Williamsville; a sister, Mary Collins of Hyde Park; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:15 a.m. Monday in St. Mary of the Cataract Church, 259 Fourth St., after prayers at 9:30 in Otto Redanz LaSalle Park Chapel, 2215 Military Road, Town of Niagara. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston.
