President Clinton's move, seemingly at Al Gore's behest, to release some oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to increase heating-oil supplies, ease energy prices and boost Gore might be the worst example yet of record presidential-candidate pandering this year. This reserve is meant to protect America if supplies are cut off -- a true emergency. There is no such cut-off of supplies . . . in the offing.
Furthermore, while prices are higher now than they were a couple of years ago, by historical, inflation-adjusted standards, they remain low -- probably too low for our long-term good. Especially in these prosperous times, the poor can be helped with their fuel problems without a presidential raid on U.S. security.
