A grand jury has charged a former elementary school teacher's aide who is also a former PTA president with sexual abuse of a 12-year-old boy.
Diane Heffner, 39, who worked in the Averill Park School District and had been PTA president for three years, was charged with six counts of second-degree sexual abuse and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, all misdemeanors. She could face two years in prison if convicted.
The indictment alleges that Heffner touched the boy on the buttocks on numerous occasions in her home from about Valentine's Day through May 17. It also alleged that, from about October through May, Heffner kissed him and engaged in inappropriate conversations.
In tapes released Sept. 12 by Brunswick Town Justice G. Lawrence Kronau, Heffner told the boy she loved him and would someday sleep with him.
The boy's parents taped several telephone conversations after they began to suspect the relationship was deepening.
