NIAGARA FALLS -- Workers using a torch touched off a fire at Norampac Industries, 4001 Packard Road, Monday afternoon.
Fire officials said the 4:50 p.m. blaze caused about $50,000 damage at the plant. There were no injuries.
Falls man, 41, is charged
with attacking woman
NIAGARA FALLS -- Jeffrey S. Conklin Sr., 41, of Cudaback Avenue was charged with third-degree assault Sunday, police said.
Conklin is accused of punching a woman over the eye and pulling some of her hair out, police said. He faces a hearing in City Court.
Woman, 18, says companion
attempted to rape her
NIAGARA FALLS -- An 18-year-old woman told police an intoxicated companion attempted to rape her in an isolated area off the North Avenue extension Sunday afternoon.
The woman told police she was walking home from a party when she was thrown to the ground and attacked.
Teacher finds suspected pot
in Gaskill Middle School
NIAGARA FALLS -- A teacher opening a classroom at Gaskill Middle School found three packets of suspected marijuana on the floor Monday morning, police said.
The drugs were discovered just before 9 a.m. at the Hyde Park Boulevard school.
Ladders, scaffold valued
at $1,100 stolen from truck
NIAGARA FALLS -- Construction equipment valued at $1,100 was stolen over the weekend from a truck parked on Krull Parkway, police said.
Police said two 32-foot ladders and a 20-foot scaffold were taken from the truck.
Car's hood jumped on, tires
slashed, taillights smashed
NIAGARA FALLS -- A car owned by a Forest Avenue man sustained $1,200 damage Monday morning when someone jumped on the hood, smashed taillights and slashed all four tires, police said.
The owner told police the car was targeted between 9:30 p.m. Sunday and 5:30 a.m. Monday.
Ex-boyfriend punched her
in face, woman tells police
NIAGARA FALLS -- An 18-year-old woman suffered a possible facial fracture over the weekend when she was repeatedly punched in the face by a former boyfriend, police said.
The woman told police Monday that she was assaulted after meeting the man in a Third Street tavern. After leaving, she told police, the two argued, and she was struck three times in the face.
Girl, 16, held in robbery,
slashing with a razor
A 16-year-old East Amherst Street girl has been charged with robbery, assault and several other crimes after being accused of cutting one girl with a razor and striking another juvenile over the weekend, Buffalo police reported today.
Northeast District officers charged Twiala Johnson with first-degree robbery, assault, weapons possession and obstructing governmental administration after an incident late Saturday night on Elmwood Avenue.
She is accused of ripping several gold chains off one juvenile's neck, in addition to the two assaults.
Officers in the Central Booking Bureau said Johnson became belligerent and uncooperative and had to be subdued.
Jewelry stolen from Kmart
is valued at $30,000
DUNKIRK -- State police Monday were investigating the theft of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry from a Kmart store Sunday.
Police said the theft occurred between 1:50 and 2:30 p.m. at the Big Kmart Store on Vineyard Drive. A small pry bar from the hardware section of the store was used to pry open the metal frame of a locked jewelry case while the jewelry counter attendant was busy with a customer, police said.
The store manager told police that the culprit escaped with possibly as much as $30,000 in jewelry. A full inventory will be required to determine the exact amount of the loss. Police Monday did not have a description of the perpetrator or a vehicle. Store videotapes will be reviewed to track down a suspect, police said.
Tip leads to the arrest
of man on Most Wanted List
DUNKIRK -- A tip from a citizen resulted in the arrest of a member of Chautauqua County's 10 Most Wanted List, police said.
Police surrounded a house on North Pangolin Street Saturday afternoon and arrested Darin Bullock, 21. He was discovered hiding in a basement crawl space.
Bullock was arraigned on charges including petit larceny, harassment and parole violation. He is currently in Chautauqua County Jail in lieu of $4,000 cash bail, City Court records said.
