OVERSIGHT TIED TO DEATH OF STUDENT WITH AILMENT

The death of a 16-year-old student with a heart condition who collapsed after climbing stairs to the school gym at Gompers High School in the Bronx was a "terrible mistake," Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani said Saturday.

The mayor said there was a letter in the file for Dantese Jenkins that indicated he was not supposed to participate in athletic activities.

"Why that letter was ignored, I don't know," Giuliani said.

Jenkens collapsed at about 8:20 a.m. Friday. The boy was taken to Lincoln Hospital, where he died.

Schools Chancellor Harold Levy said he learned that Jenkins' mother had given the school a doctor's letter stating that the boy should not be involved in any physical activity.

Levy said school records confirmed the boy's condition and showed that Jenkins had participated in gym class for the second semester last year.
