Joseph A. Amato of Amherst, a retired Buffalo shoemaker, died Friday (Sept. 22, 2000) in DeGraff Memorial Hospital, North Tonawanda, after a brief illness. He was 82.
Born in Wyoming, Pa., he attended high school in Pennsylvania before moving to Buffalo 56 years ago. He operated Joe's Shoe Repair at Main Street and Winspear Avenue for more than 33 years, until the building was ravaged by fire in 1979.
He worked for three more years at a Main Place Mall shoe-repair shop and an Elmwood Avenue orthopedic shoemaking business before retiring.
He was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of more than 50 years, the former Margaret E. Bonafede; two daughters, Maria Ross of North Augusta, S.C., and Judith Ann Abbinanti; a sister, Carmela; two brothers, Rudy of Amherst and Charles of Lackawanna; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Benedict's Catholic Church, 3980 Main St., Eggertsville, following prayers at 8:30 in Lombardo Funeral Home, 102 Linwood Ave. Entombment will be in Elmlawn Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
