The Canisius College football team's losing streak has hit an unlucky 13.
Gannon held Canisius to 36 yards rushing on 35 carries while Kevin Cloherty and Jason Cunningham ran for 299 yards to power the Golden Knights to a 17-12 win over the Golden Griffins at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Erie, Pa.
Cunningham -- whose 55-yard touchdown opened the scoring less than four minutes into the game -- finished with 137 yards on 21 carries for Gannon (2-2). Cloherty, who scored on an 8-yard run to give Gannon a 15-12 lead in the fourth quarter, had 162 yards on 26 carries. Gannon clinched the game with a safety with 2:24 to play.
Mark Nachreiner (North Tonawanda) kept Canisius (0-3) in the game by passing for 275 yards and two touchdowns, including a 62-yarder to Jack Coppola (Forestville) that gave Canisius a 12-7 lead with 1:32 left in the third quarter. Coppola finished with six catches for a career-high 164 yards while Tom Zabawa (Hutch-Tech) had seven receptions for 72 yards.
MEN'S SOCCER: St. Bonaventure (3-5) scored twice in the first seven minutes and cruised to a 3-0 defeat of visiting Canisius at McGraw-Jennings Field. Freshman Nathan Sellers and sophomore Geron DePorte scored 1:16 apart to drop Canisius to 1-5-1. . . . Jesse Mankowski and Tim Wyand scored as Fredonia improved to 6-1 with a 2-1 defeat of visiting RIT (3-2-1), which received five yellow cards.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: Shawna Younglove converted a pass from Lyndsay McWilliams with 2:30 to play to give Niagara a 3-2 victory at Rider (1-6, 2-0 MAAC). Niagara, which also got goals from freshman Rosie Luzak (Lew-Port) and Lynda Hughes, is 4-3, 2-0 in the MAAC. . . . Canisius dropped its second straight MAAC game with a 6-0 loss at Loyola (Md.). . . . Jaclyn Bolognese (Orchard Park) and Kim Nogle (Tonawanda) each scored twice as Buffalo State (2-5, 1-2 SUNYAC) routed Utica-Rome, 8-0.
VOLLEYBALL: Northern Illinois (2-0 MAC) improved the best overall record in the Mid-American Conference to 10-2 with a dominating sweep of UB. Freshman Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda) had a team-high seven kills and five digs for UB (3-9, 0-2), which lost 15-6, 15-0, 15-5. . . . Nicole Lucie (Lancaster) had 23 digs on the day as Canisius (3-10, 1-1 MAAC) swept Marist but was swept by the hosts at the Bucknell Tournament. . . . After the first day of State University of New York Athletic Conference pool play at Geneseo, Fredonia (9-7) is 3-1 while Buffalo State (10-8) is 1-3. Brockport leads at 4-0. Catherine Heinrich (Williamsville East) had 13 kills in Fredonia's defeat of Buffalo State, which got 10 kills from Jessie Miller (Frontier).
