Services for Robert A. Gonser, 68, a retired bricklayer and mason who died Wednesday (Sept. 20, 2000) in his home in Hamburg after a two-year illness, will be held today.
He grew up in Buffalo and learned brick laying at McKinley Vocational High School. He worked as a brick layer at Bethlehem Steel Corp. for 18 years and left to form a business with three partners, Mardagonte Co. of Orchard Park, which did work throughout the area. The business closed in 1990, and Gonser retired in 1997.
He was a member of the Hamburg Building Board. He was past president of the St. Francis of Assisi Holy Name Society and also was past president and a former trustee of the Knights of Columbus Council 2220 Columbus Club.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, the former Lucille Lambert; five sons, Joseph of Las Vegas and Robert, Charles, Gerard and Matthew, all of Hamburg; four daughters, Claudia Monroe of Westfield, Nancy Pacer of West Seneca, Mary of Angola and Cynthia of Hamburg; five sisters, Helen Marrano of Eden, Ethel Feedham of Kenmore, Florence Sanders of Oroville, Calif., Julia Leslie of Reno, Nev., and Shirley Gonser of Hamburg; a brother, Frank of Lincoln, Neb.; and 13 grandchildren.
Services will be held at 8:30 a.m. today in Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home, 4199 S. Lakeshore Road, Hamburg, followed at 9 by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
