My family and I recently moved to Buffalo from out of state. So far, we have been delighted with our new home. But I must confess I am confused about the Erie Canal "controversy" I have been following in The News.
One of our projects this year is making the rounds of the area's tourist attractions, and certainly historical sites like the famous Erie Canal are high on the list. We had already discussed taking our son to see the canal. Imagine our surprise to find out that there is no site to visit.
As a newcomer unfamiliar with the politics of waterfront development here, this is a no-brainer. Not only should we develop the area as a historical site, we should seek out as much national and regional support as possible.
I've read a lot of talk from local politicians about bringing Buffalo back from economic hard times. I think maybe some of the difficulty is an "image" problem for the city. When we even consider passing up a golden opportunity like this, it's no wonder.
