The Buffalo Bandits chose Ryan Powell, a forward from Syracuse University, as their first pick in the National Lacrosse League entry draft Thursday in Toronto. Powell played for the NCAA national champion Orangemen, scoring 45 goals and 51 assists in 16 games.

Powell was one of four Orangemen picked by the Bandits in the nine rounds. Buffalo also took Syracuse defenseman Joe Ceglia in the third round (20th overall), forward Tim Byrnes in the fifth round (43rd), and forward Kevin Kelley, a Williamsville native, in the ninth (79th).

Other players selected were Virginia defenseman Ryan Curtis (second round, 13th overall), Orangeville (Ontario Lacrosse Association) forward Pat Merrill (second, 15th), Virginia forward Drew McKnight (sixth, 52nd), Duke forward T.J. Durnan (seventh, 61st), and Nazareth goaltender Jake Coon (eighth, 65th).
