The East Aurora Police Department, in conjunction with state and federal officials, is sponsoring an auto theft prevention program that will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the East Aurora Fire Department, 575 Oakwood Ave.
The "Watch Your Car" auto theft program offers two methods to help deter vehicle thefts. The first method is a voluntary vehicle registration program in which owners sign a document stating their vehicles are not normally used between 1 and 5 a.m. and allow for police anywhere in the United States to stop the vehicle and verify ownership if it is seen being driven between those hours.
In that case, decals are put on the front and rear windows identifying the vehicle as a program participant.
The second method is the vehicle identification number etching program. Vehicle owners can have the vehicle's VIN etched onto each window. That works as a deterrent against auto theft because the etched numbers could not later be changed or altered without damaging the window.
The crime prevention program is part of a national effort designed to deter auto theft and help in their efforts to arrest auto thieves.
Residents wanting to register their cars in the program must have a valid driver's license, vehicle registration and valid insurance card. For information, call the East Aurora Police Department at 652-1111.
