IUE TO MERGE WITH CWA UNION

By a voice vote, the International Union of Electronic Workers on Thursday agreed to merge into the Communications Workers of America after the IUE's leader warned survival as a union was at stake.

IUE President Ed Fire, who was re-elected Thursday, told delegates that IUE membership has declined from 224,000 in 1980 to 107,000 now and that further internal cutbacks are no longer possible.

The merger with the 630,000-member CWA will create an IUE-CWA Industrial Division within the larger union.
