A seven-horse accident resulted in a most unusual finish in the third race at Buffalo Raceway on Wednesday night.
Only one horse, Southwind Verde, escaped the wreck and finished the race. The pacer, driven by Ron Wittenberg, rewarded his backers with one of the highest across-the-board payoffs in raceway history. He returned $22 to win, $21 to place, and $47 to show, as his backers reaped all the money wagered on the $2,000 race.
The accident began when front-running Shezamachine, driven by Charles Bacon, broke stride exiting the clubhouse turn on the second lap. No serious injuries were suffered by horses or drivers.
