Lynda Hughes' goal midway through the first half proved to be all the offense the Niagara women's soccer team needed on Wednesday afternoon.
Goalkeeper Rayanne Roman (Lockport) was called upon to make only four saves to register a 2-0 shutout of visiting Canisius in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Shawna Younglove completed the scoring later in the first half for the Purple Eagles (3-3), who finished with a 24-10 advantage in shots on goal. Crystal Wall made 10 saves for the Griffs (1-7).
MEN'S SOCCER: Senior midfielder Sean Kelty collected two goals and an assist to help St. Bonaventure bag a 4-3 win at Colgate. Johnny Phoumanny and Joe Baiata also scored for the Bonnies, who improved to 2-5 for the season.
MEN'S BASKETBALL: St. Bonaventure has released its schedule for the upcoming season and the Bonnies will begin regular-season action by competing in the Hispanic College Fund Classic at Fresno State University in California Nov. 17 and 19. They will play New Mexico State in the first round and either Fresno State or St. Mary's (Calif.) in the second.
Key dates on the Bonnies' schedule include a visit to defending Atlantic 10 Conference East Division champion Temple on Jan. 6 and a home game with defending West Division champ Dayton on Jan. 25.
They also visit Niagara at the Gallagher Center on Dec. 4 and host Canisius at the Reilly Center on Dec. 30. Bona hosts UNC Charlotte at Rochester's Blue Cross Arena on Nov. 25.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Canisius made quick work of Niagara, beating the Purple Eagles, 15-13, 15-7, 15-7, as freshman Nicole Lucie (Lancaster) led the way with eight kills and 14 digs. Kate Calderone chipped in with six kills for NU (2-6). Jodie Bowers (Sweet Home) had 14 digs for the Griffs (2-8).
