COLLECTION OF GARBAGE, RECYCLABLES TO COINCIDE

Starting in the first week of October, Silver Creek residents will have their garbage and recylables collected on the same day.

According to Mayor Timothy Heavern, garbage and recyclables will be collected every Thursday. Only garbage placed in Silver Creek bags will be collected, and heavy items that are likely to tear the bags should be placed in a garbage can lined with a village bag.

"I think it will be better for everyone, and I think it's a good idea," he said of the new collection schedule.

Heavern said garbage, recyclables and heavy metal should be placed at curbside after 6 p.m. the day prior to pickup. Demolition and building materials will not be collected.

For recyclables, one item per week will be collected. During Week 1, crews will be collecting metal food and beverage cans and metal coat hangers only. Soft plastic containers with code No. 1, 2 or 5 will be collected during Week 2. Residents are asked to clean, flatten and remove lids on the items.

For Week 3, cardboard, newspapers, magazines, catalogs and other shiny paper such as inserts will be collected. Wax-coated cardboard, cereal boxes, milk cartons and pizza boxes are to be placed in regular household garbage. Clear glass bottles and colored glass -- green and brown -- will be collected during Week 4. Clear glass should be separated from colored glass. Items such as mirrors, ceramics, light bulbs, window glass and drinking glasses should be put in household garbage, Heavern said.

On the first and third Monday of each month, crews will be collecting brush. Brush should be placed at the curb no more than 24 hours before pickup, the mayor added. Heavy metal items will be collected on the last Wednesday of each month; these include large appliances, steel pipes and drainpipes. No appliances containing Freon will be collected. A certified refrigeration person must remove Freon, and a certificate will be attached to the appliance before it will be collected.

Heavern said bags, for 75 cents each, can be purchased at the Village Hall between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday except on legal holidays. Also, copies of the collection calendar are available to residents. For information, call Village Hall at 934-3240.
