ACCOMPLICE GETS PROBATION IN THEFTS FROM ELDERLY WOMAN

LOCKPORT -- A woman who helped her husband loot an elderly woman's life savings was placed on five years' probation Wednesday and ordered to repay $20,000.

Donna M. Paonessa, 35, formerly of 15th Street, Niagara Falls, was sentenced by County Judge Sara Sheldon Sperrazza on her guilty plea to fourth-degree grand larceny.

Paonessa's ex-husband, Michael J. Paonessa, 39, is serving two to four years in prison for the same offense.

The couple obtained a power of attorney from a widow in their neighborhood and wrote themselves checks on her account between September 1993 and November 1996.

In another sentencing Wednesday, Stephen J. Page, 21, of Haeberle Avenue, Niagara Falls, was sentenced to three to six years for third-degree burglary.

Judge Peter L. Broderick Sr. imposed the sentence on Page, who was caught June 11 leaving a Pierce Avenue woman's apartment with a shopping bag full of property.
