GARY GRANT, HAWKINS WAIVED BY NBA CLUBS

The Cleveland Cavaliers waived veteran guard Gary Grant, less than three weeks after obtaining him from the Portland Trail Blazers in a three-way trade also involving the Miami Heat.

Grant, 35, came to the Cavaliers as part of the five-player trade on Aug. 30 that sent forward Shawn Kemp to the Trail Blazers and forward Brian Grant to the Heat.

In Chicago, the Bulls waived guard Hersey Hawkins after one disappointing season with the club.

Hawkins, 33, averaged 7.9 points in 61 games, making 49 starts. He was scheduled to make $4.5 million next season, which would be his 12th in the league.

In Cleveland, Seattle Supersonics forward Ruben Patterson and one of his friends were charged with felonious assault for beating a man outside a nightclub in the Flats in June. The charge carries a sentence of two to eight years in prison.
