A photo exhibit, "Buffalo: Portrait of a City," a journal created by CEPA Gallery and students from the Baird and LaSalle Chapters of the Boys and Girls Club of Buffalo this summer, will open with a reception at 8 p.m. Friday at the gallery in the Market Arcade.

Youth Leadership Erie County, sponsored by Leadership Buffalo, is looking for high school sophomores and juniors with leadership potential for its Class of 2001 program. Application deadline is Sept. 29. Call Cynthia Horrigan at 852-2762, Ext. 421.

The New York Power Authority will hold a free wildlife festival in honor of National Hunting and Fishing Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Artpark, Lewiston. Visitors can learn about archery, bird banding and turkey calling or fish in a pond set up by the Niagara River Anglers. The day will include retriever and K-9 demonstrations, programs on wildlife rehab and face-painting.

High school seniors are invited to compete for scholarships and the chance to be named a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts in the 2000-2001 ARTS program of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. ARTS is accepting applications in dance, film and video, jazz, music, photography, theater, visual arts, voice and writing. Students should contact their guidance counselor for an application, call (800) 970-ARTS, or apply online at www.ARTSawards.org. The deadline to apply is Oct. 20. There is a $35 processing fee.

The Villa Maria Academy cheerleaders won grand champion title for the third consecutive year at the Erie County Fair. Brianne Leary, a junior at Lancaster, was chosen overall "Outstanding Cheerleader." She is a varsity cheerleader at Lancaster High and cheers for the Buffalo Warriors semi-pro football team.
