Douglas T. Sanders of Buffalo, a 22-year Army veteran, died Wednesday (Sept. 13, 2000) in Erie County Medical Center after suffering a fatal heart attack. He was 67.
Born in Marion, Ala., Sanders enlisted in the Army at a young age and was involved in operations support in both the Korean and Vietnam wars before retiring as a staff sergeant in 1971.
His interest in the military continued after his service, however, and he was an avid reader of books pertaining to the military.
After retiring from the service, Sanders moved to Buffalo, where he lived the rest of his life. For about 20 years after his retirement from the service, he was employed as a metalworker.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; three sons, Douglas III and Dale, both of Atlanta, and Kevin; a daughter, Stephanie of Newport News, Va.; a stepdaughter, Sylvia of Hampton, Va.; nine sisters, Essie Holland of San Leandro, Calif., Carnelia Sanders of Cincinnati, Lauree Woods of Mobile, Ala., Sadie Miree of Fort Wayne, Ind., Helen Melton of Sprott, Ala., Beverlyn Bennett of Marion and Andree Sandes of Merritt Island, Fla., Melonese Scott and Lolita Bulluck; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bethlehem Baptist Church, 165 Doat St. Burial will be in St. Matthews Cemetery, West Seneca.
