Lynda Hughes scored three goals and Shawna Younglove and Rosie Luzak (Lew-Port) had single tallies on Sunday as Niagara (2-3) defeated the host Penguins, 5-1, in the championship game of the Youngstown State Tournament in women's soccer. Rayanne Roman (Lockport) had 10 saves in the win.
Hughes, Luzak, Katie Runeari and Julie Schork (Tonawanda) of Niagara were named all-tournament.
Canisius (1-6) bowed to Howard, 1-0, in the third-place game despite eight saves by goalkeeper Crystal Wall.
Stine Kloster's three goals led Jacksonville University (7-1) over the University at Buffalo (5-3), 4-3, in the championship game of Stony Brook's Holiday Inn Express Invitational. Nicole Olszewski, Jennifer Keefe and Elizabeth Pfeffer scored as UB built a 3-1 halftime lead. Olszewski, Paula Listrani and Emily Cox of the Bulls made all-tournament. . . . St. Bonaventure (2-4-1) salvaged third-place in the Lady Bluejay Classic in Omaha, Neb. with a 4-1 win over Northern Iowa. Jen Twardzik led the Bonnies with two goals and an assist. Lisa Nicola and Janet Giuliano had the other St. Bona goals. Nicola, Twardzik and Kristin Konstanty of the Bonnies made all-tournament.
MEN'S SOCCER: Geoff Thompson (Clarence) scored in the first half and Tim Songer got what proved to be the game-winner at 48:14 as UB (3-2-1) survived a physical battle with Long Island University in Brooklyn, 2-1. There were 49 fouls and LIU received four cards for rough play.
MEN'S TENNIS: Freshman Joel Carney of St. Bonaventure was 3-0 at No. 3 singles in the Colgate Invitational and teamed with Mark Gorski for a 2-1 record at No. 1 doubles.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: UB defeated Canisius, 5-2, as Karen Maynard, Kris Van Schoonhoven (Lockport), Shani Smarasinghe, Anne Schule (Amherst) and Meaghan Partelow won singles matches.
