A 21-year-old man suspected of stealing a car ended up with a bullet in the buttocks when a state trooper's gun accidentally went off, police said.
Acting on a report by a woman who heard someone steal her car out of her driveway at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, a state trooper saw the car at a nearby intersection. As the trooper approached the car on foot, the driver put the car in motion, hitting the trooper and knocking him off balance.
Police said the trooper's gun accidentally went off, the bullet passing through the door of the car and hitting Phillip K. Boyce.
Boyce drove about a mile before crashing the car. He was stuck in the car and was rescued by firefighters.
He was taken to Albany Medical Center, where he was placed in police custody, charged with felony counts of assault, reckless endangerment and possession of stolen property and a misdemeanor count of driving while intoxicated.
